Antique Telescope Tripod - Adapted from Folmer Schwing Crown Tripod 2. This attractive antique Tripod is designed to hold very large telescope such as the 44 inch Military style E.

It is based on the Folmer Schwing Crown Tripod 2 (division of Kodak, ca1900) made to hold early cameras. It an antique telescope mount designed to hold tubes for larger. The combination looks reasonably old and the major components date from the early 1900s. The brass loop meant to hold the draw has been lined with canvas to prevent what otherwise would be inevitable gouging of the draw.

The tripod is adjustable and the legs can be detached or collapsed for transport. However, the legs cannot be locked open due to the mechanism of attachment to the platform, allowing both inward. Both of these problems are partially mitigated by a triangular spreader; however, the tripod is safer on carpet or outdoors. A very large telescope cannot be held by a single person and must be mounted in some way for use to its full capability.

In other words, it has to have a stable stand. Unfortunately, authentic antique telescope tripods are usually expensive and difficult to find as they generally hold other antique telescopes.
